Using the thermosiphon method (link to blog section on thermosiphon), heat from within the panels would ascend into the hot water cylinder before falling as cold water into the collectors. Because these systems had no moving parts for their solar heating, very little could break down. It makes the Edwards Hiline a perfect solar water heater, along with the stainless steel cylinder.
Moreover, Edwards offered a line of LX exchange systems featuring heat exchangers integrated right into the hot water cylinders. This system would use a mixture of glycol and water to keep water inside the panels from freezing in colder locations.
